IMPORT OF COPPER SCRAP IN CHINA

According to Chinese customs data, in November China imported 101,835 thousand tons of copper scrap, 58% less than in November 2018. Taking into account the average Cu content in scrap at 78.28%, the copper content in the imported material amounted to 79.719 thousand tons, slightly more than in October, but 44% less than in November 2018. According to the results of the first 11 months of 2019, 1.22 million tons of copper were delivered to China in the form of copper scrap, 1.25% (15,000 tons) more than in the same period last year. The increase in supplies is associated with a sharp increase in the import of material in the first half of the year before the introduction in July of restrictions on the import of so-called category 6 material.

In the third quarter, scrap imports amounted to 120 thousand tons, and in the fourth – 100 thousand tons, due to the fact that Beijing is reducing quotas for scrap imports in light of reducing imports of solid waste to zero by the end of 2020.

In January-November, China imported 558.1 thousand tons of copper scrap with an annual quota of 560.6 thousand tons.
